Rainbow Collages

Kindergartners read a book about Rainbows and how they work.  We talked about the different colors that make up a rainbow.  We then used cut paper to create our own rainbows!  We practiced basic skills such as cutting and gluing.

Chinese Masks

Going along with the Chinese New Year theme, third graders viewed examples of masks worn in parades during the New Year celebration.  We focused on symmetry along with collage!  The kids came up with some really great paper masks!

Lorax

In celebration of the late Dr. Seuss, Kindergartners watched a portion of the new Lorax movie and created their very own cut paper Lorax!

Pattern Grids

Second graders discussed different ways to make patterns, focusing mostly on ABAB patterns.  They used cut paper shapes to create a pattern inspired piece of art.

Love Monsters

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Kindergartners made their own love monsters!  We focused on how to cut a symmetrical heart, and used those cut pieces to assemble a love monster.

Fraction Fish

Third graders reviewed their fractions of a circle (1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32) They then used these various fraction pieces to create an underwater scene.   These compositions were made up entirely of cut paper! I love the creativity and diversity!

Cornucopias

Third graders learned about the origin of cornucopias and looked at the variety of things that are placed inside.  Using cut paper and crayons they created their own cornucopias featuring whatever fillings they wanted.

Mittens

First graders read the inspiring book “The Mitten Tree” about a lovely lady who secretly knits mittens for all the children in the neighborhood and hangs them on the tree by their bus stop.  First graders created their own unique mitten by using magazines, paper scraps, and wallpaper samples!  This was a great time for the students to explore and practice cutting as well as expression through collage!

Cardinals

First graders read a book featuring these two cardinals on their journey through a winter wonderland.  They then made these wonderful mixed media cardinals.  The students used cut paper for the bird and bath, yarn for the wings, sharpie for details and white paint for snow!  These were great at giving the walls a wintery feel, especially because it hadn’t snowed yet in Kansas!

Dhurri Rugs

Third graders learned about a trade common in India, the weaving of Dhurri Rugs.  Dhurri rugs are hand woven rugs usually brightly colored and geometric in pattern.  They adorned the floors of palaces in India.  They are woven out of camel hair, cotton, silk, Jute, and many other fibers.  Third graders watched a man operate a horizontal loom.  The students created their own Dhurri Rugs using cut paper.  I brought in my fun, design cutting scissors from home and the kids went to town!  They used paper scraps to create these Dhurri Rug masterpieces!  As a finishing touch, some students were able to attach yarn!
