Dali Mustaches!

This lesson was both informative and VERY fun!  Second graders learned about the Surrealist Salvador Dali.   They were exposed to the word surrealism and viewed some of Dali’s artwork.  Then we learned more about Dali and his quirky personality by viewing photos of him and his various mustache stylings!  To get into our Dali mindset we adorned ourselves with cut paper mustaches. We reviewed the word portrait and created ink portraits of Salvador Dali. As a finishing touch second graders placed a pipe cleaner on to create a 3D stache!

Why Is Blue Dog Blue?

First graders read the awesome book, Why Is Blue Dog Blue? by George Rodrigue and learned about Blue Dog’s artist, Rodrigue. They learned how to draw their very own Blue Dog in any color they desired!

Dr. Seuss Cakes

As part of our continued celebration of Dr. Seuss, sixth graders created cakes as an ode to Seuss!  I was so impressed with how many great illustrators we have at Marlatt!

Monkeys

Mrs. Runyan’s class drew some AWESOME monkeys!  We read a silly book about monkeys and shared facts that we knew. I mean, how cute are these?

If I Ran the Zoo

Third graders read the Dr. Seuss classic “If I Ran the Zoo” and took inspiration from his illustrations to create a imaginary animal fit for Mr. McGrew’s Zoo. Many were inspired by the tizzled topped tufted mazurkas!

Light Source Drawings

Fourth graders discussed the importance of a light source/s in a piece of art.  Their assignment was to create a composition that had a source of light and in that light source perhaps something unexpected is discovered! The kids had so much fun with this assignment and I was amazed at some of the crazy, creative things they came up with!

Crazy Cows!

First graders read a very funny book, The Cow That Laid An Egg and then learned how to draw a cow. We drew our cows in perspective as if they were right in our face about to give us a kiss! First graders used crayon and watercolor to practice wax resist technique.

Long Necked Giraffes

Second graders read a non-fiction book about giraffes and shared facts they knew about this beautiful creature. They then learned how to draw a giraffe on their own. My favorite part about this assignment was how proud and successful EVERY second grader was!

Wild Things

After reading the classic book “Where the Wild Things Are” kindergartners created their own wild things.  We brainstormed different characteristics a wild thing might have on the board and then they went to town creating these very unique, wild things!

Pastel Foxes

Second graders read the book “Fox” featuring wonderful illustrations by Georg Hallensleben.  The students then learned how to draw a fox by breaking it down into simple shapes.  Using oil pastels, they completed their drawings experimenting with blending of warm colors.  So many kids were successful on this project!  It was hard not to photograph them all!
