First graders discussed what a symbol is and how they can be used as a universal language. We then took a virtual tour of the Lascaux caves located in France. Students discussed the images they saw, what they thought the artists used, how long ago this art occurred, etc. In pairs they got the opportunity to visit the “cave” in the back of the room and make their mark. Students created their own cave drawings that told a story using symbols.
