Pattern Grids

Second graders discussed different ways to make patterns, focusing mostly on ABAB patterns.  They used cut paper shapes to create a pattern inspired piece of art.

Overlapping Patterned Snakes

First graders read a great book by one of my favorite authors, Gail Gibbons, about snakes.  Their assignment was to draw 3 snakes that overlapped and consisted of pattern. They completed these drawings using oil pastels!

Hokusai Zentangle

Fifth graders participated in a critique of the famous woodblock print “The Great Wave” by Kaksushika Hokusai.  They used this image as a starting place for their own wave images.  They used ink to create zentangle patterns in the wave.  They then chose a neon color tempera paint to fill in their background.

Line Bugs

Fourth graders reviewed the vocabulary words line, rhythm, repetition, movement, and emphasis.  Students chose a print out of a bug, cut it out and pasted it anywhere on the paper.  Then using only line they were to create a piece of art that used the vocabulary words.

Mixed Up Art

Third graders made a piece of art using ink lines and crayons.  They then had their image cut up into 2″x2″ squares and had to glue them down in a different order to make  a different piece of art.

Pattern Mugs

Students brainstormed different patterns at their tables, then we created a master list on the board.  Second graders learned the difference between forms and shapes.  We discussed how to draw a cylinder in perspective and the importance of a horizon line.  Then we drew our very own, unique pattern mugs!

“We Ain’t Gunna Paint NO MORE!”

!st graders read the book “I Ain’t Gunna Paint No More” by Karen Beaumont.  They then traced their arm and decorated it with patterns and designs using neon tempera paint.

Abstract Line Design

First graders read the book “Matthew’s Dream” and we discussed vocabulary words such as abstract, line, design and pattern.  Students were to draw a squiggle and then fill in each section with different lines and patterns using markers.
