Poppies, Poppies!

This week in Kindergarten we viewed a clip from the Wizard of Oz.  We watched it first in black and white, and then again in color.  We discussed reasons why they liked the black and white vs color.  We then watched the poppies clip.  We looked at what the poppies close up to us looked like and what they looked like as they disappeared into space. We visited the word perspective and used it to understand the space in this scene.  We used oil pastels to create the stems of the poppies.  They then painted the poppies using tints and shades of red.  The had small, medium and large brushes to create the poppies.

Pastel Pumpkins

1st graders read the book “Runaway Pumpkin” which features a very large pumpkin that starts rolling down a hill and out of control.  We talked about the word perspective and put it to use when drawing our pumpkins.  Large in the center, smaller as it goes back in space.  Students experimented with oil pastels and blending warm colors on their pumpkins.
